- [Phillip Dillard] Giants' blogger thinks Dillard could be 'something special' for Giants
- Giants.com now has a profile page for Dillard. Not much information yet except the usual: height, weight, jersey number... and that he attended Wisconsin..
Dillard will where #55. LB TJ Hollowell wore the same number for the G-men in the mid-2000s.
- Blog:The Sports Geek sees Rookie of the Year potential in one Husker draftee, but not the one you might think:
"[The Giants] nabbed some great defensive line talents with raw skills in Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph. But what I think was their best pick is Phillip Dillard who I tag as a potential defensive rookie of the year sleeper. Look out for these Giants in 2010."

[Dan Alexander] Alexander (who plays for the new Arena League's Alabama franchise) continues his scoring frenzy, leading the league in rushing touchdowns with 13. He is averaging approximately 4.3 rushing scores a game, and is on pace to score 68 rushing touchdowns. If Alexander maintains a rushing touchdown average of at least 2.6 per game throughout the season, he will shatter his own single-season record of 41 set in 2007. (OurSportsCentral.com)

- [Phillip Dillard] Despite missing their top choice, New York Giants happy with NFL draft pick Phillip Dillard
- Giants considered Dillard in the 3rd Round
- A few comments compiled by Big Blue View:
--From Yahoo! Sports:
"The addition of LB Phillip Dillard from Nebraska in the fourth round could be the most underrated pick of the Giants draft as the inside linebacker is a quick study who could ultimately find a home in that linebacking group if incumbents Jonathan Goff(notes) and Gerris Wilkinson(notes) don’t work out.
"Dillard probably won’t be the starting middle linebacker this year, but he has a lot of upside from both an athletic and mental grasp of the game, and could ultimately earn some snaps if the winner of the Gerris Wilkinson-Jonathan Goff battle doesn’t pan out."
--From Mel Kiper:
"Giants fans may not know Phillip Dillard, but as inside linebackers go, he has excellent range and could develop into a really good one. At No. 117 overall, that's a nice get."

- HuskerLocker with an early look at Huskers in the 2011 draft
- Of Note: For the first time since 2007, a Husker was drafted higher than the 5th round.
Prior to the 2007 draft and with the exception of 2004, at least one Husker had been selected in the first 3 rounds each year since 1971.
In all but four drafts during that span, a Husker had been selected within the first 2 rounds.

- [Phillip Dillard, Larry Asante] Day 3 in the books:
-Asante had been expected to possibly go as high as the 3rd round but dropped to Cleveland in round 6.
-Dillard was picked in the 5th round, on the high end of where he was expected to go. What was unexpected is that the Giants waited until the 5th round to cover one of their biggest needs.
- ESPN on the Giants 5th round pick: The Giants finally address their middle linebacker need with the selection of Phillip Dillard. The highly productive linebacker from Nebraska has good instincts, and is a tough, downhill player in the middle. He should compete for the starting job as a rookie.

- [UFL] After many rumors and speculation, Omaha may get UFL club
- From HuskerLocker.com: "It's really no secret that plenty of former NU players are milling around a five-state area who would seriously consider trying out. And, from this point forward, if and when Husker players can't land on a NFL roster, an automatic default option - far surpassing the indoor Omaha Beef in compensation and visibility - now exists."
- Comment: It looks like outdoor Pro Football has come Omaha (and yes, it is "Professional" ball). As the HuskerLocker blog suggests there may be a few familiar players who tryout, but being a former Husker doesn't mean they'll make the new Nebraska club. While signing players that the fans are familiar with might help with initial ticket sales it seems unlikely that a team looking for success in a league so small would strictly aim for local alumni over the best possible players.
For those throwing out names like Eric Crouch on fan forums, keep in mind that his last football tryout was in 2007 (for the never-launched AAFL).
The most likely candidates won't be players who have been "milling about" on low-level outdoor and indoor teams. Potential players for a new Omaha club will come from the same pool the rest of the league uses: borderline NFL stock. Of the Huskers who tried out last year, the two who made it had been with NFL clubs within the previous year: Cory Ross (Ravens, 2008) and Marlon Lucky (Bengals, 2009). One who didn't make it, Joe Ganz, tried out for the UFL after an unsuccessful tryout with the Redskins.
The league's leading rusher in 2009 and a popular Husker, Ross (who plays for Sacramento) would be a perfect fit for a new Nebraska franchise- as would Marlon Lucky (Hartford). Unfortunately both players were placed on the protected lists by their respective teams; as was former UNO star and eight-year NFL veteran Chris Cooper (Sacramento/Raiders).
Other candidates will likely appear from the NFL's current list of free agents, soon-to-be undrafted free agents, and/or those cleared from NFL cut downs in August.
