- [Atlanta Falcons] Williams enthusiastic about rehab
- [Atlanta Falcons] Coach Bobby Petrino reiterated comments from earlier in camp that starting weakside linebacker Demorrio Williams still must take his rehab slowly from a torn pectoral muscle that required surgery in April.
Petrino said the team is probably going to give it another week and then start to build him into contact. For right now, he is doing everything besides contact.
The Falcons are likely to start rookie Stephen Nicholas, a fourth-round draft pick from South Florida in Williams' place, though former Auburn standout Travis Williams, who re-signed as a "street" free agent in January, has impressed the coaching staff enough to earn snaps. (WRBL.com)

PhillyHomer.blogspot.com: Showed flashes getting into the backfield but took several bad angles allowing for big runs. Must improve reading defenses. Definitely out of position at Mike linebacker. Seems to be better than Simoneau, which is a breathe of fresh air. Needs time, maybe a year to learn the defense. Grade: B.
EaglesPhiladelphia.blogspot.com: Lead the team with 8 tackles, and played a lot yesterday. He made a very nice play in the run game, and was visibly very vocal on the field. He did have a penalty on punt coverage.

08/13/07
- [St. Louis Rams] Carriker Feeling Comfortable at Tackle
- [Carollina Panthers] Comments from Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox following the team's morning training camp practice:
On how defensive end Mike Rucker's rehab is going-- "It's been excellent. He's had no setbacks knock on wood. We're easing him back into it, much like Travelle Wharton, Dan Morgan. We've got a few of those guys in that situation. Mike's coming along just fine."
On what Rucker's presence on the field means to the team-- "He's been around a long time. Those guys are used to him. They look to him both for calls mentally and stuff on the field. He's a front-line guy that we miss when he's not in there. We'll bring him along slow, and by the end of preseason he'll be ready to go." (Panthers.com)

- [New England Patriots] LeKevin Smith was one of the Union Leader's ten elements to "keep an eye on" when the Patriots faced the Buccaneers: "The big defensive lineman was only active for three games in his rookie season, but is poised to be a backup in the middle. He should see plenty of snaps tonight to give the coaches a good look at his development from year one to year two. (UnionLeader.com)
- [Baltimore Ravens] The Ravens special teams practiced a fake field goal. On the play holder Sam Koch rolls out and throws to TE Quinn Sypniewski. Koch has a very strong arm and will oftentimes throw 40-50 yard passes downfield simulating punts. Koch has been a bit inconsistent punting but lately has been crushing bombs with directional purpose towards the right sideline.

- [CFL] Sandro 'Gramatica' DeAngelis?: Some of the Edmonton Eskimos would like to give Calgary kicker Sandro DeAngelis a swift kick in the butt or another nether region for his dramatic celebration after kicking the game-winning field goal for the Stamps.
"To me, it was overzealous and unprofessional," Edmonton tailback Mike Bradley was quoted in the Edmonton media. "It wasn't the kick to win the Grey Cup."
"If you don't want to see them celebrate, beat them on the field," Eskimo head coach Danny Maciocia said. "It's as simple as that."
Edmonton kicker Sean Fleming added his own take.
"When you win a game, you can do anything you want," Fleming told the media. "It's certainly something I wouldn't do, but I've seen him do it before.
"I don't look very highly on that. I like Sandro. (Calgary coach) Tom Higgins says act like you've been there before. I can understand some jubilation, but to sprint down field and slide? This is not European soccer."
We're still trying to get over the fact the Eskimos were playing the Stamps with a guy named Stamps -- Fred Stamps -- in their lineup. (sportsnet.ca)

- [Tampa bay Buccaneers] (Coach Jon Gruden told reporters that "(Matt) Herian, a young tight end, was held out of practice with a calf strain" on Saturday.
- [Philadelphia Eagles] It isn't enough that rookie third-round pick Stewart Bradley is spending post-practice time on the field learning the nuances of strongside linebacker.
The youngster from Nebraska also is being initiated into the NFL by having to carry the helmet and shoulder pads of veteran linebackers Jeremiah Trotter or Takeo Spikes to the locker room after practices.
"This is the fun part of camp," Bradley said.

- [Atlanta Falcons] The Falcons also released guard Toniu Fonoti, a former second-round pick of the San Diego Chargers who was attempting to salvage his career.
"He's a vet, and if he's going to make it with a team, he needs to be let go now so he's got a chance to hook on with somebody else," McKay said. "We just kind of liked what we've seen from [Justin] Blalock, and we've liked what we've seen from the guys behind Blalock." (AJC.com)
- [Green Bay Packers] The stars couldn't be better aligned for second-round draft choice Brandon Jackson. Starting running back Vernand Morency is out two to four weeks with a knee injury and Jackson is running with the No. 1 unit.
He has the opportunity to take the top halfback job by the horns and ride it all the way into Philadelphia on Sept. 9. No one is threatening Jackson at this point, although when seventh-round pick DeShawn Wynn regains his strength from a stomach virus and rookie free agent Corey White gets more opportunity, that could change.
"Right now, I go in with the mind-set that I have to stay on top of it," Jackson said. "
Jackson is eager to show what he can do in live action because a big part of his game is bouncing off defenders and slipping tackles. He was a starter for only one season at Nebraska and hasn't proved he can take a pounding through an entire National Football League season.

- [Baltimore Ravens] Ross might be on shaky ground. With return specialist B.J. Sams healthy again and rookie Yamon Figurs impressing coaches with his speed, Cory Ross knows he faces stiff competition at kick returner this season.
The former Nebraska running back who joined the team as a rookie free agent in 2006 took over return duties for the injured Sams during the last four games of the season, averaging 21.6 yards on nine attempts. While the edge is clearly with Sams so far, Ross said he is not letting that affect his focus on trying to get better every day.
"Competition is competition wherever you're at," said Ross, who added that he learned a lot from Sams last year. "The only thing I can do is just have fun and do what I do." (Baltimore Sun)

Rucker repeatedly said, "I’m going to get you Jake’’. Delhomme kept running, turned the corner and dashed into the end zone. Rucker then yelled, "I pulled up on you’’. Delhomme responded by lightly flipping the ball at Rucker, who flipped the ball back at Delhomme. (Charlotte.com)

- [Baltimore Ravens] Observations from Don Markus of the Baltimore Sun: ...one (uniform) number that I might not have to memorize is 34. It belongs to Cory Ross, the second-year cornerback and return specialist who took over when B.J. Sams went out with a broken leg last season.
Ross, who produced modest results in the team's last five games, is clearly fighting for a job with the return of Sams and the added presence of Yamon Figurs, the team's third-round draft choice out of Kansas State, who was the fastest in the 40 at the NFL's combine this year.
At special teams practice today, Ross didn't help himself, twice getting some constructive criticism from special teams coordinator Frank Gansz Jr., first when Ross outran his protection and later when he mishandled a wobbly kickoff from rookie Brendan Carney.
Ross and the rest of the Ravens were going back to the team hotel to study their playbook.
- [New Orleans Saints] Camp Battle for Saints starting FS spot: Josh Bullocks vs. Kevin Kaesviharn for starting FS spot -- The Saints brought Kaesviharn in from the Cincinnati Bengals for two reasons. Harper, however, has shown no ill effects from his injury. Bullocks, on the other hand, is also rising to the challenge so far in camp and holding on to his spot. (The Sports Xchange)
