- [Detroit Lions] Among MLive.com's "Quick impressions from the first day of camp"-- "First-round pick Ernie Sims and second-round choice Daniel Bullocks did not practice with the No. 1 defense. They both came in with the second unit. They're not going to just give the job to a rookie, apparently."
- [Buffalo Bills] Bills defensive end Chris Kelsay has played sparingly at right defensive end in his time in Buffalo, but he took some reps on that side of the formation Wednesday. Working on the second unit behind Aaron Schobel, Kelsay also rotated up to the top defensive line unit when Schobel was given a break. Ryan Denney assumed Kelsay's left defensive end spot on the first d-line. Mark Word meanwhile was used at left defensive end with the second group. He had been on the right side most of the time. - [CFL] In the Edmonton Sun's "Hits and Misses" of Eskimos training camp, Dahrran Diedrick is a "Hit"--
Showed off good hands coming out of the backfield - something he had little practice at while at the University of Nebraska. "I worked on my hands real hard all off-season," said Diedrick. "Ed Hervey told me to keep a softball with me, throw it up all over the place and work on the hand-eye co-ordination."

- [New England Patriots] PatriotsInsider.com ranked Russ Hochstein as the #4 "out-of-nowhere contributor in the Belichick era".
"Russ Hochstein, 2003 playoffs: Another guy who got his shot at the most pivotal of times, starting for the first time at guard in the Super Bowl against Carolina. Considering the Pats dominated the battle of the trenches -- and gave a big middle finger to Warren Sapp, who questioned Hochstein at Media Day -- Hochstein was one of the best fill-ins since Pete Best went for a sandwich during Beatles practice and Ringo took over. I know it didn't actually happen like that, but you get the point.
- [Carolina Panthers] Marty Hurney said the team was still waiting for a resolution on undrafted rookie offensive lineman Seppo Evwaraye, the Finnish exchange student who played at Nebraska. While one Web site reported last week he had been waived, technically he can't because he hasn't signed a contract yet. He agreed to a three-year deal with a $7,500 signing bonus, but won't collect until he obtains a work visa. (HeraldOnline.com)

- [Free Agency] LB James Allen injured his patella tendon at Saints OTAs Wednesday and will miss 2006. At least it's not Reggie Bush. Allen, who missed nearly all of last season with a knee injury, was expected to compete with Anthony Simmons to start on the strong side. New Orleans was already thin at linebacker, so they'll likely check out what's left on the market. Earl Holmes, Jay Foreman, and Greg Favors are available. (Rotoworld.com)

- [Green Bay Packers] Brett Favre is one of several players who will miss minicamp, which is voluntary, though Mike McCarthy suggested all the absences were agreed upon shortly after he put out his offseason schedule in February. McCarthy mentioned only one player who won’t attend, halfback Ahman Green, because of a charity commitment. Green is recovering from a torn quadriceps tendon and won’t be ready to practice until late August anyway. (Green Bay Press-Gazette)
- [San Diego Chargers] The team will benefit from the return of Carlos Polk from an Achilles injury that caused him to miss the season. At 262 pounds, Polk is the prototypical 3-4 linebacker. He has the ability to play inside or outside and is a past recipient of Chargers Special Teams Player of the Year honors. "Right now we’ve got him on the outside but he could help us at different places," head coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "I love his attitude and energy." (Chargers.com)

Fonoti wouldn't disclose his current weight to the media, but mentioned, "I can't really say anything other than that I am a big guy." Fonoti said that the Bucs had him playing exclusively at guard, and primarily on the left side, although he has taken some reps at right guard, too. (PewterReport.com, KFFL)

- Mini camp pictures (updated)
- [Baltimore Ravens] From a minicamp report by Mike Duffy of BaltimoreRavens.com-- "One player that I'm excited to see is punter Sam Koch (pronounced Cook). He didn't get to boot any kicks on Saturday, probably because both practices were spent indoors in the fieldhouse. I caught a glimpse of him warming up a few minutes ago with long snapper - and tryout player - Landon Schrage, but he was just working on fielding the snap and going through the motions at that point.
- When asked who Ravens fans should "lookout for" amongst undrafted free agents, GM Eric DeCosta said "Cory Ross from Nebraska; a smaller running back but very, very quick feet. He's gonna probably challenge PJ Daniels to be the 3rd down running back for the Baltimore Ravens. He's got some returnability, he's got very, very good hands, and he's a good route-runner. I think he's a guy who comes in and competes." (BaltimoreRavens.com)
The interview, along with a short clip of Ross, is available here; see 'Eric DeCosta: Rookie Minicamp' @ 1:50.

- [Philadelphia Eagles] Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg had this to say Sunday about his expectations of RB Correll Buckhalter-- "I'll
tell you what, I hope he gets back. Now, Buck's coming off a very, very serious injury. I think we all know that, very, very serious. So, I went through one of those with (former 49ers RB) Garrison Hearst, the great Garrison Hearst. It's a very, very serious injury and there were times where I thought there was absolutely no way Garrison could make it back and he did. So, Buckhalter is trying to kind of defy the odds just a little bit here and I wouldn't put it past him to get back and play very well. So, we're certainly
hoping that that happens. Buckhalter's working extremely hard. He's doing far and beyond the call of duty there. He's doing everything in his power to get
back on that field." (KFFL)

- [Minicamp] Chargers LB Carlos Polk has waited nearly a year to get back on the field after suffering an Achilles injury last summer. "I can’t wait to put that helmet back on and get after it," Polk said. "We’ve been working hard in the weight room and on our own, but there’s nothing like getting back together with your teammates. I’ve missed that." (Chargers.com)

"Every now and then it shows up, but it's not going to be like that all the time," he said. But asked if there was still a place for longtime Lion Cory Schlesinger, he said: "Oh, yeah. Absolutely." What that place is has yet to be determined, however. "That role really gets defined when we put the pads on," Millen said. "That's when Cory defines himself."...
