- [MLB] Dan Johnson: Called Up From Triple-A
- [Minors] Former Husker Gordon Is Texas' Player Of Year
- [Free Agency] MiamiFootball365.com reports that Dolphins head coach Nick Saban may "sort through others teams' castaways and try to find a couple of rare and deeply hidden gems". The number 3 "gem" was former QB Jammal Lord--
"Lord was apparently doing very well in a short stint with Indianapolis before being waived. The guess is that the former Nebraska quarterback was too raw at this point to make the Colts' roster. His 6-2, 225-pound frame and athletic ability make him worth a practice squad spot and perhaps some situational duty."
- According to ColtPower.com-- "...Another surprise cut was safety Jammal Lord, who the Colts brought in to camp roughly a week prior to their first preseason game against the Rams. Lord picked up the defensive scheme quickly, contributing well with three tackles against the Rams while logging extensive playing time. He was also noticeably active on special teams."
- [Baltimore Ravens] Whereas PJ Daniels arrived with some status, fellow rookie runner Cory Ross has had to overcome not being a draft pick and a lack of size. The 5-foot-6, 200-pound undrafted free agent has impressed with his speed and toughness. He has performed adeptly as a return specialist, but doesn’t appear to have toppled incumbent B.J. Sams. Ross has returned four punts for a 12.5 average, and six kickoffs for a 23.5 average.
"I can’t lose sleep worrying about it," Ross said. "I’m going to compete until they tell me if I’m on the team or not."
- It looks like rookie Sam Koch has won the punting competition over veteran Leo Araguz, and it’s possible that Koch’s ability on kickoffs could alleviate the need for kickoff specialist Aaron Elling. (RavensInsider.com)

- [New Orleans Saints] Linebacker Scott Shanle, who was traded to the Saints by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, had a unique perspective on the Mississippi heat.
"Oh my, it liked to have killed me, and I've only been here a week," Shanle said. "The Cowboys training camp was in Oxnard, California and it was 75 degrees with no humidity."
The Saints coaching staff wanted a quick evaluation of their new linebacker so they thrust him into the starting lineup against the Colts. "I guess they wanted to see what I was made of and then to go up against a tremendous offense like the Colts have, it was tough. I kind of wilted there, late. But this team has talent. We just have to be able to get off the field after third downs," Shanle said. (The Vicksburg Post)

“He was vaccinated with a phonograph needle,” Schottenheimer said. “His mouth is running all the time. Sometimes he engages his brain, sometimes he doesn't.”(Union Tribune)
- Training camp was much quieter a year ago with Carlos Polk on the sideline nursing an Achilles injury. Polk’s leg is fully healed, and it’s apparent that his mouth is feeling great as well.
“He was vaccinated with a phonographic needle,” Schottenheimer said. “Sometimes he engages his brain, other times he doesn’t. He is a terrific guy and one of the most popular guys on our football team.”
Polk provides a running commentary throughout practice in hopes of keeping his teammates loose and making the workouts a bit more fun.
“Camp can be a grind sometimes, and I just try to lighten it up,” Polk said. “The offense doesn’t like it sometimes when we’re killing them and I’m telling them about it, but it sure is fun for me.” (Chargers.com)
