- [St. Louis Rams] Offensive guard Richie Incognito was in Rams Park on Friday, a day after signing a four-year contract. Incognito, a third-round pick who is rehabbing following kneecap surgery, is hopeful of playing this season.
"I have a lot of desire to get on the field this year," Incognito said. "I feel I will be ready in Week 6 to put on the pads and go out there and play and practice, but you know it's kind of a deal where we have to wait to cross that bridge." (AP)

- [MLB] Stern heads west: The rookie season of outfielder Adam Stern officially ended Sunday morning, when the Rule 5 Draft pick flew to Los Angeles to get his right labrum operated on. Stern left on a good note, scoring a crucial run as a pinch-runner in Saturday's 4-3 win.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona was asked if the team considered keeping Stern around for the rest of the regular season as a pinch-runner.
"Out of fairness to him, we appreciate what he does. He's only pinch-running," said Francona. "As far as this kid's career goes, it's getting to the point now where you push it back any father, it's going to make it harder for him in Spring Training. This was a fair thing for him to do. He tried for a couple weeks to make this work, throwing, and it wasn't working. You got to take care of your guys, that's the only right thing to do." (MLB.com)

- [Chicago Bears] Mike Brown has not yet been fined by the NFL for his hit on Marcus Pollard that drew a 15-yard penalty and knocked the Lions tight end out of the game with a concussion. But the Bears safety is expecting to receive an overnight package from the league any day now.
"Most of the guys here that have been fined said they get a FedEx in their locker," Brown said. "I thought I would have it already. It hasn't shown up yet, but I'm sure it's going to.
"It's in the rule book-if you make helmet-to-helmet contact, that's a fineable offense and I believe I hit him with my helmet."
Brown wasn't trying to injure Pollard, a fact that the tight end and Lions coach Steve Mariucci echoed after the game. "Anyone who's been around football long enough knows that it wasn't a dirty play," Brown said. "It was just a play that happened."

- Despite being fleet of foot, even multimillionaire professional athletes can't outrun investment scams. Former Denver Broncos defensive end Neil Smith is one of several high-profile professional athletes identified as victims in a Las Vegas-based investment scam, according to this month's issue of Forbes magazine.
Smith, who played on the Broncos' 1998 Super Bowl team, claims he was bilked out of $1 million. Baseball stars Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez together invested more than $1 million, the report said.
Federal prosecutors allege that Dennis D. Cope and his partner, Edgar M. Bias, raised $18 million from 11 people for a New Mexico oil and gas operation, never invested the money and returned $8 million to pacify angry investors. Both have been indicted on 32 counts of securities fraud and face trial next month.

- Latest cutdowns include a few surprises: Houston S Jammal Lord (candidate for practice squad), Giants LB TJ Hollowell, Chargers DT Ryon Bingham, Rams DT John Parrella, Cardinals TE Aaron Golliday, Jacksonville DE Benard Thomas, and Raiders LB Jay Foreman.
- [Chicago Bears] Jerrell Pippens is waiting on pins and needles for the final Bears cuts today, but he couldn't have helped his bid to make the team as a reserve cornerback when he allowed Cleveland's Antonio Bryant to haul in a 48-yard pass along the sideline Thursday.
Pippens and Rashied Davis are still on the roster after veteran Todd McMillon was cut, and it would seem likely both will make the team. However, nothing is certain at this point.
"Human nature, I'm disappointed," Pippens said. "I had a great offseason, great OTAs (June workouts), pretty good training camp, but today it didn't come together." (DailySouthTown.com)
- [New York Giants] The "third tier" of Giants linebackers consist of three young players with whom the team is clearly pleased: T.J. Hollowell, a second-year player who returned an interception for a touchdown on Thursday, Jim Maxwell, and Chase Blackburn.
What the Giants will probably be forced to do is place two linebackers on the practice squad. Only Blackburn, Hollowell and Maxwell are eligible because they have played fewer than nine games in their career. The problem with that move is that any team can sign one of those players to their active roster at any time, like when the Falcons stole defensive end Khaleed Vaughn from the Giants last year.
