CFL: The Guyana-born Winston October capped his TD run by crossing the goal line backwards, a tribute to Johnny Rodgers, the Alouettes' so-called Ordinary Superstar of the 1970s.
"I made a promise to the fans that if I scored a touchdown, I'd go in backwards," said October, who wasn't born until 1976 and never saw Rodgers play. "I only remembered at the last minute and I told myself: Oh yeah, I gotta do the Johnny Rodgers thing. (CP)

Parrella met his teammates in St. Louis for San Diego's game against the Rams, then flew back to Grand Island, where his father was buried Tuesday.
"I know my dad would say, 'Move on."' Parrella said earlier this week. "I'll never forget him. A part of me is gone, but the biggest thing is I know where he's at. He's in heaven and he's probably laughing at all of us right now that we're mourning over him." (Charlotte.com)

09/22/00 - It has been an upbeat week for Scott Frost. The former Nebraska option quarterback, in his third season as a Jets safety, came up with his first NFL interception late in Sunday's victory over Buffalo. And this week he's going up against Tampa Bay, which has a former college quarterback-turned-safety who he has looked up to for years.
"(Bucs safety) John Lynch is just somebody I admire," Frost said. "He came from the same kind of past that I came from. He went from being a quarterback his first few years in college to being one of the best run-stopping safeties in the NFL. He didn't get there overnight, either."
As for the ball he picked off, he sent it home to Mom, back in Wood River, Neb. But Carol Frost might not put it in the trophy case right away -- she was a world-class discus thrower who competed in the 1968 Olympics and might want something to toss around as she's keeping an eye on the Sydney Games. Cornerback Michael Booker, who was signed last week after being released by the Atlanta Falcons, will likely play on special teams against the Chiefs and could be ready to play in some select defensive packages.
Booker was de-activated for the Bills game, just days after he was signed. The former first-round pick for the Falcons -- he was selected with the 11th pick overall in the 1997 draft -- has not had much special teams experience in his playing career. I didn't really do it much at Nebraska and didn't do it in Atlanta, but I'm excited about that here, Booker said. "I just want to find a way to contribute any way I can. If that's on special teams I'll line up and go. If they want me to play on defense, I'll do that.
This is a good situation here, and they have guys here who are good players, I just want to contribute anything I can, he added. "If that's playing, OK, if it's just encouraging people and working hard every day, OK.'"
Booker could see time in the dime package if he can learn the defensive quickly enough. But they have seen enough from him already to want to play him on special teams. The 6-2, 200 pounder runs well and could help as an outside player in kick coverage.
Mike Brown and members of the Chicago Bears will donate a holiday gift of $22,500 to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless this year. The gift was arranged through Bears Care, the charitable arm of the Bears, and includes a 50 percent match from the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation. Other Bears' participants are Blake Brockermeyer, Cade Mc Nown, and Marcus Robinson. They met with children and mothers from the Coalition on Tuesday, November 21 at the Rainforest Café in downtown Chicago.

Q&A with Terry Brands
The Neil Smith question has been answered. The free agent defensive end has reached an agreement with the team. That's a good thing for a 0-1 club that has two more standing defensive ends than it does victories.
Problem is, is Smith ready to play?
At least we know one of the reasons why it took so long to come to terms with the 6-4, 270-pound 12-year veteran. Smith, who resides in Kansas City, wasn't going anywhere until his wife gave birth. The baby girl was born Tuesday and Smith immediately signed. But, because of it, he wasn't due into town until Thursday, which means he has missed yet another day of practice. The 34-year-old Smith, who recorded 6.5 sacks with Denver last year and has 104.5 for his career, is expected to play in Sunday's home opener against New Orleans. He reportedly is in good shape and probably will see spot duty in nickel situations.

09/01/00 - Mike Brown is proving the class of the class, winning the free safety position from vet Shawn Wooden. Brown has an excellent sense of defenses and is both a hitter and ballhawk. He corrected a poor tackling technique early and stopped Eddie George head on in the Tennessee game.
