  • 12/00: All game long, I watched Will Shields. Couldn't take my eyes off the man. There he was, out of position, in bitter cold, in howling wind, in a meaningless game, performing in front of a half-empty stadium, and he played his heart out. He played from the soul.
Man, it was beautiful. (KC Star)
  • 12/00 - Many of the players on the Rams defense were in denial all season, perplexed and even insulted that anyone would question or criticize their performance.
But defensive end Grant Wistrom is a straight shooter. He plays hard, all of the time, and he won't make wimpy excuses to try and deflect blame. Counting Saturday the Rams lost six games this season in which they scored 20 or more points.
"I hope there are some changes made," Wistrom said. "I definitely think there's some problems with the defense. And we've got the people upstairs who are going to address it. And the coach, too. We're going to change some things, and I'm excited about it. Something needs to be done. This defense was way too passive this year. And I think that's got us into trouble in a lot of football games."
      What about the effort?
"I know there's some guys out there who were battling," Wistrom said. "I never questioned them. Those guys will be back with me next year. And we're going to be a better defense. We're going to win more football games. And this defense will be something to contend with next year." (St. Louis Post)

  • XFL: Outlaws S Toby Wright came to the aid of a teammate in need Monday, as the NFL veteran from Nebraska traded jerseys with CB Kevin Scott. Wright, who was assigned jersey #3 (his college number), generously traded his number to former Stanford Cardinal standout Scott, who refused to wear his assigned #32 due to "a moral issue." After some investigation, it came to light that Scott conscientiously objects to wearing O.J. Simpson’s former number. Wright wore #32 during his six NFL campaigns with the St. Louis Rams in order to pay homage to his idol Jack Tatum.

"I know my dad would say, 'Move on."' Parrella said earlier this week. "I'll never forget him. A part of me is gone, but the biggest thing is I know where he's at. He's in heaven and he's probably laughing at all of us right now that we're mourning over him." (Charlotte.com)

  • 09/22/00 - It has been an upbeat week for Scott Frost. The former Nebraska option quarterback, in his third season as a Jets safety, came up with his first NFL interception late in Sunday's victory over Buffalo. And this week he's going up against Tampa Bay, which has a former college quarterback-turned-safety who he has looked up to for years.
"(Bucs safety) John Lynch is just somebody I admire," Frost said. "He came from the same kind of past that I came from. He went from being a quarterback his first few years in college to being one of the best run-stopping safeties in the NFL. He didn't get there overnight, either."
As for the ball he picked off, he sent it home to Mom, back in Wood River, Neb. But Carol Frost might not put it in the trophy case right away -- she was a world-class discus thrower who competed in the 1968 Olympics and might want something to toss around as she's keeping an eye on the Sydney Games. • Cornerback Michael Booker, who was signed last week after being released by the Atlanta Falcons, will likely play on special teams against the Chiefs and could be ready to play in some select defensive packages.
Booker was de-activated for the Bills game, just days after he was signed. The former first-round pick for the Falcons -- he was selected with the 11th pick overall in the 1997 draft -- has not had much special teams experience in his playing career. I didn't really do it much at Nebraska and didn't do it in Atlanta, but I'm excited about that here, Booker said. "I just want to find a way to contribute any way I can. If that's on special teams I'll line up and go. If they want me to play on defense, I'll do that.
This is a good situation here, and they have guys here who are good players, I just want to contribute anything I can, he added. "If that's playing, OK, if it's just encouraging people and working hard every day, OK.'"
Booker could see time in the dime package if he can learn the defensive quickly enough. But they have seen enough from him already to want to play him on special teams. The 6-2, 200 pounder runs well and could help as an outside player in kick coverage.

  • The Neil Smith question has been answered. The free agent defensive end has reached an agreement with the team. That's a good thing for a 0-1 club that has two more standing defensive ends than it does victories.
Problem is, is Smith ready to play?
At least we know one of the reasons why it took so long to come to terms with the 6-4, 270-pound 12-year veteran. Smith, who resides in Kansas City, wasn't going anywhere until his wife gave birth. The baby girl was born Tuesday and Smith immediately signed. But, because of it, he wasn't due into town until Thursday, which means he has missed yet another day of practice. The 34-year-old Smith, who recorded 6.5 sacks with Denver last year and has 104.5 for his career, is expected to play in Sunday's home opener against New Orleans. He reportedly is in good shape and probably will see spot duty in nickel situations.
